::Inprint Brown Reading Series Featuring Dave Eggers and Chimamanda Adichie:: Houstonist just finished reading the new books by both these authors and was *blown away.* HALF OF A YELLOW SUN, Chimamanda Adichie's novel about the Biafran War in Nigeria in the late sixties, follows the political and military developments through the eyes of several civilians, painting a human and devastating portrait of war. Similarly, Dave Eggers' fictionalized autobiography of the very real Valentino Achak......

> There are a lot of great acts in town this week with something for everyone's musical taste. The "big radio" shows include Rush, Nickelback, Puddle of Mudd, Korn, and Evanescence all of which take place outdoors at the Woodlands pavillion. Please remember it is still very hot...even at night. For those not wanting to face the night sweats, check out Texas indie rockers Centro-Matic on Wednesday and Eisley on Thursday. But to really get......

We hate to ruin the suspense, but what the heck: the rum? Still gone, people. That's indicative of the general tenor of Pirates of the Caribbean III: At World's End. There's still Orlando Bloom being kind of a tool for the most part, still Keira Knightly being plucky, and still Johnny Depp being Keith Richards. Of course, this time there's also Keith Richards being Keith Richards, which may explain Depp's seeming drop in quality from......

The nicer the weather gets, the busier we get across the Ist-A-Verse. But we like being busy. Here's a peek at what we've been up to since last week! Chicagoist had an interview with Audrey Niffenegger, whose popular book, The Time Traveler's Wife, was based in their fine city. They also had a heated discussion about Rush Limbaugh's controversial Barack Obama parody, talked about whether Uncle Julio's Hacienda is a good place to get......

Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. The former global AIDS coordinator had to resign from his position this week because it came to light that he hired “escorts.” How do people in power expect any of us to take them seriously when it seems like every week another “leader” is outed for not practicing what they preach? Since when do people in power think they get to live beyond......

The shot from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor deneyterrio. Sometimes these long-exposure shots of traffic seem gimmicky. Not in this case. It is a great angle and captures I-45 looking northeast towards the Lyric Center. Also, the hazy orange coloration that is sometimes created in foggy/misty situations is a common part of the Houston rush hour experience for many people. The only thing about this shot that seperates it from being completely iconic......

Houston’s old artist friend David Adickes is shifting his focus from painting back to the monumental sculpture that he’s known for. Even if you’re unacquainted with Adickes and his neartown studio littered with giant busts of all forty-three presidents, you’d surely recognize the gigantic Sam Houston statue, his most famous work as well as our favorite part of making the trip to Dallas. Adickes has decided to take his work in a new direction though.......

An accounting consultant being paid by former Enron CEO Jeff Skilling testified yesterday that Skilling — and Enron — did nothing wrong in the accounting practices prosecution witnesses called shady and dishonest. Accountant Walter Rush was testifying in the trial of Skilling and former Enron Chairman Ken Lay, which is in its last days. Rush said accounting in a company as large and complex as Enron is highly complicated, and company officials often had to......
