::Nights on Blue Bayou: City Soundscapes:: Tonight brings us the second installment of the Buffalo Bayou Partnership's Nights on Blue Bayou series. An awesomely unique event, that brings Houstonians to the banks of Buffalo Bayou for a neighborhood block party-esque event under the stars. Nights on Blue Bayou: CITY SOUNDSCAPES is a multi-dimensional series of events on the banks of the bayou, beneath the historic Sabine Street Bridge, presented by the University of Houston Cynthia...

We figured it was worth recapping the traffic closures coming downtown in the next couple of days as part of the Freedom Over Texas celebration — so if you're planning to drive that way, pay attention: As of 10 a.m. today, the exit ramps to Allen Parkway from I-45 north- and southbound are closed, as is the ramp from Walker Avenue to Allen Parkway. The inbound lanes of Allen Parkway are closed at Taft and...
So it's almost time for Chevy's Freedom over Texas, the city's July 4 celebration — and that means some traffic changes you'll want to know about, beginning this weekend. One change in the festival plans is the result of all the rainy weather we've been having lately: The main stage will move from the south bank of Buffalo Bayou, where it's usually located, to the inbound lanes of Allen Parkway and the feeder road...
Mayor White held a press conference about the city's new skatepark, scheduled to open next summer, yesterday. Apparently, some people at KHOU were very excited about it. In their coverage, they said that the new skatepark will cover 30,00 acres. As one blogger pointed out, this is larger than the entire Reliant Stadium complex. The world's largest skatepark is the size of three football fields - roughly 3 acres, not 30,000. We did a little...
If you're looking for an event that is just dripping with cuteness, here you go. On Thursday, May 31, Buffalo Bayou ArtPark hosts an opening reception for sculptor David Chien's new exhibit titled, Superheroes Alter Egos. According to the Buffalo Bayou ArtPark press release, the concept behind this exhibit is to put superheroes into everyday situations. The exhibit features three large scale temporary sculptures depicting superheroes doing ordinary activities, like walking the dog. Chien is...
The easiest way to give back, or pay it forward, as well as the least expensive, is to give some of yourself and your time to a good cause. We have apprised you of the International Festival's need for bodies to make the festival a success. Now, we have a little environmental action for you, and it's educational, in addition to the warm fuzzy you'll get. Much of the litter that makes it's way...
Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor seven twenty-five and contains this description: Wildlife in the city. And this wildlife can be spotted at Eleanor Tinsley Park (also known as Buffalo Bayou Park) off of Allen Parkway and Sabine Street in the shadows of downtown Houston. This is a great park with over 124 acres that extends from near downtown Houston all the way to Shepherd. Wildlife abounds...
Houstonist is a big fan of the developing parkway system along Buffalo Bayou downtown. The sections that are finished seem very well done, and walking along the bayou from Sabine Street to Allen's Landing — yes, it can be done — gives you a completely new look at the city. Unfortunately, it also gives you a look at a whole lot of trash, as the Chronicle notes today: a parade of aluminum cans, plastic bags, paper, styrofoam containers and other refuse floats down the bayou and collects on its banks, which makes for a not-so-pretty sight. And guess what? You might be contributing to it:
When we heard that the Sabine to Bagby Promenade along Buffalo Bayou was underwater during Monday's storms, just over a week after it opened, we couldn't help but wonder what the park would look like when the waters receded. Sure, we knew the permanent fixtures would make it, but we worried that all the nice landscaping would have floated out to sea. But, as it turns out, it didn't: Aside from some silt and trash that the water deposited, the park looks as good as new, the Chronicle reports.
So here's a civic project to get excited about: Tonight, Buffalo Bayou Partnership will host "Blue Bayou," a party to celebrate the opening of the Sabine to Bagby Promenade, a new park along Buffalo Bayou from downtown to the Sabine Street Bridge. The $15 million park — which doubles as a flood-control project — includes 2 miles of hike and bike trails linking the Allen Parkway/Memorial Drive trails with Sesquicentennial Park, 12 new street-to-bayou stairways...
So here's something interesting: There was a cattle drive in downtown Houston today. It wasn't a big one, and it wasn't actually, you know, , but still — you don't see that just every day. (Fortunately, though, you can see it today in this raw footage from KHOU.)
