Good morning, Houston. According to a government report released yesterday, the national average price for a gallon of gas rose to $2.876 last week, up 7.4 cents over last week. Bad news, eh? But here's something good: A gallon of gas is, in general, a lot cheaper than that in Houston. Not that it's cheap or anything — according to reports, it'll cost you anywhere from $2.59 to $2.99 here. Looks like we might... more ›

So what do you do if you're an ex-president with some extra time on your hands during the holidays? One idea: become a Salvation Army bell ringer like former President Bush and Barbara did yesterday. George and Bar were kettleside outside Gallery Furniture to help increase donations — two of the Salvation Army's four U.S. regions reported last week that giving is down as much as 11 percent compared with last year. "We know we're... more ›

Remember how Mayor Bill White's anti-panhandling campaign began yesterday? Well, you weren't the only one to notice (if you did notice, that is): In a bizarre move, a homeless guy e-mailed KHOU and said the mayor's push for Houstonians to donate to social service agencies is a bad idea. The homeless guy is Randi Laird: “The mayor says if you want to give, give to the Coalition for the Homeless. Well the Coalition has no... more ›

Two Houston men were arrested yesterday for allegedly pocketing about $48,000 they collected by setting up a fake hurricane relief site. And who says you can't make money fast on the Internet? (We guess all those get-rich-quick promoters forget to tell you about the part where FBI agents come haul you off.) more ›

Heather Armstrong is using blog ads to feed her family. Neil Kramer weighed the ethics of accepting a Sprint cell phone on the condition he writes about it on his blog. Ist readers need only look on the left and right sidebars to realize bloggers are looking for ways to wrangle the fruits of their labor into cold, hard capital. Then why, as The New York Times is reporting, are some bloggers participating in the... more ›

Houstonist's slide down the slippery slope of yuletide spirit was interrupted this morning by a delightful passage in the Chronicle's profile of George Tims, a 90-year-old Salvation Army bell ringer: Christmas was moving in fast at the big box store. The mercury hunkered in the 30s — cold enough to make your nose drip — and a nasty wind knifed in from the north. Faces showed strain. Parking gridlock reigned. Peace and goodwill? Oh, ho,... more ›

So today is National Ding-A-Ling Day. Yep, that’s right. There’s a day for pretty much anything you can think of. No, it’s not a celebration of Chuck Berry’s 1972 novelty hit, but it’s to recognize bell ringers around the world. So drop another quarter in the Salvation Army kettle when you walk into Central Market today. Houstonist found it interesting that it was also Bob Barker Day. Is it a coincidence that these two celebrations... more ›

The sound of pocket change clanking into those distinctive Salvation Army red kettles during the holiday season is a bit lacking of late, local officials told the Chronicle. Compared to this point last year, the organization has seen a 10 percent drop in donations. The cause? Donor fatigue. You can thank Katrina, Rita, the Pakistan earthquake and even the tsunami for that. Nevertheless, local Salvation army officials told the Chron they were confident they'll... more ›

Though we didn't have the drama of the out-of-control balloon at the Macy's Thanksgiving parade, Houston's parade wasn't without its mishaps — namely, a gas leak that caused one woman to pass out. About 500 people were watching the parade near Texas and Caroline on Thursday morning when spectators began saying they smelled gas leaking from a manhole at the intersection. One woman fainted and was transported from the scene with no serious medical problems.... more ›
