Houstonist ventured downtown on Saturday afternoon to enjoy the dazzling artistic talent on display at Via Colori, along with what seemed like half of the city. The inner graffiti artist in Houstonist is excited about the chance to see the city tagged legally this weekend. The Center for Hearing and Speech will host it's 3rd Annual Via Colori Street Painting Festival at Sam Houston Park (Allen Parkway and Bagby). Over 175 artists will create original artwork on the streets of Houston in squares sponsored by various local donors. While you're checking out the art you can nosh on festival food and beverages, or you can take your kiddies to the Via Bambini area where they can color in their own squares. This free event will also showcase some of Houston's favorite musicians on two stages. Some of the artists featured include The Brian Kalinec Band, Corian Ellisor feat. To go along with Dr. Pepper's "23 flavors" campaign, the company started a campaign called "The Hunt for More", where they hid 23 gold coins in 23 different cities in North America. Some good news for local park lovers today: City Council has unanimously agreed to designate Sam Houston Park a protected city landmark. The designation means that Sam Houston Park is protected — or at least as protected as anything gets in Houston — from obliteration by future development; any future action that would alter or threaten the park would have to be approved by the city.
