Good morning, Houston. Pardon us, but we seem to have lost our phone number. Can we borrow yours? Yeah, we know — it's lame. And apparently we're not the only one with a bad pickup line: Houston is the country's 14th best city for singles, according to Forbes magazine. We lag behind Dallas-Ft. Worth (No. 9) and Austin (No. 12), but we're far ahead of San Antonio (No. 28). On the bright side, Houston...

With Harry Potter on the brain, we realized it's been awhile since we strolled into McGonigel'ss for some good ole open mic fun. Every Tuesday night at the Mucky Duck, signers and songwriters fill up the small, cozy Greenway Plaza pub with the sounds of acoustic guitars and tapping feet. Tonights songwriters include Shake Russell, Jed & Kelly, and Mary Cutrufello. From Bar Harbor, Maine to Santa Fe, New Mexico; from Los Angeles, California to...

Good morning, Houston. If you ever stop to think about all the ordinances in effect in the city — admit it, you do — you probably wonder just how much space all those laws would take up if they were written down. Well, now we know: around 5,000 pages. That tidbit comes from the Chronicle's Matt Stiles, who recently reported that the city approved a new three-year contract with the Municipal Code Corp. of...

Good morning, Houston. Were you one of the folks who lined up Friday to pick up an iPhone? And have you gotten it activated yet? If so, you're lucky: A lot of people are having trouble getting their shiny new toys activated, and until they do, none of the so-called Jesus phone's features — not even its alarm clock — will work. Though most customers have been able to activate their phones in a...

Good morning, Houston. Are you a smoker? Are you home from work today? According to a new report, smokers take an average of 11 more sick days each year than their nonsmoking colleagues — that's a 43 percent difference. Of course, the research was done in Sweden, which has some of the highest sick-leave rates in the world, and much of the time off could be traced to factors other than smoking-related illness —...

Good morning, Houston. If you attended mass on Ash Wednesday, we hope it went more smoothly than one at the cathedral in Santa Fe, N.M. During the mass, CD players duct-taped to the undersides of pews began blasting sexually explicit language — as you might expect, it was disruptive. Church staff members took the CD players to the basement, after which a bomb squad arrived and blew two of the three players up. For...

Christmas is coming and petty yard theft is on the rise. Houstonist didn't think yard ornamentation had much street value - but apparently, it does. First, someone made off with the baby Jesus in Santa Fe, and now, in Friendswood, a thief made off with a snowman, reindeer and a 10-foot tall snow globe. Apparently, when one swipes a large decoration, it's best not to have your no-seatbelt-wearing passenger riding around with an inflatable snowman...

Tis the season - to make off with a manger and Baby Jesus? According to the Galveston Daily News, thieves tried to abscond with the homemade manger and baby Jesus from a home in Santa Fe, Texas. The manger was later found in a neighbor's yard, however, baby Jesus is still "at large". The homeowner's have posted a sign in their yard near the nativity to berate the culprit(s). This is the first incident in...

Potentially interesting news about an old bone found in a truck full of soil and gravel near Santa Fe: It could be a really old bone — like hundreds of thousands of years. The bone in question is a tibia (that's a leg bone, in case you've forgotten) found in a dump truck last week, and though the jury is still out on its age, it looks like it could belong to someone who lived...

Houstonist admits it: When we were in school, we pulled some pranks on our teachers. But we never set a teacher's hair on fire — and if we did, we probably wouldn't be here today to tell you about it. That's why we think the kid who set Santa Fe High School teacher Rachel Brauer's hair ablaze should be thanking his lucky stars that Brauer is saying she doesn't want him to go to jail....
