Good morning, Houston. Next time you happen to be walking along Northwood Drive in Baytown — and really, we can't imagine why you would be — be sure to use the sidewalk. If you don't, you could end up being slapped with a $150 citation. It happened to Clifton Stewart, a minister who said he moved to the neighborhood to save money; on Aug. 21, Stewart was cited for violating a state law that...
Good morning, Houston. Looks like we'll have a tougher time cracking out those fake Benjamins next year: The $100 bill will soon be getting a high-tech makeover to thwart counterfeiters. The key feature: 650,000 tiny lenses embedded in each bill, which will magnify the printing so that the portrait of Benjamin Franklin appears to move up and down or side to side, depending on which way you move the bill. "It makes for a...
Have what it takes to be a roller girl? Weeeelllll, here in HTown, we get our action two ways - flat track (which Houstonist loves and follows and has since the proverbial get-go) and, banked track. Calling all skater chicks and roller derby aficionados!!! The South Side Roller Derby, Houston's Banked Track league, is holding boot camp tonight from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Pearwood Skate Center. Late notice? Never fear, there will...
We're not sure whether it was something in the air or what, but something seems to have made Houstonians decide to crash into each other (and, in a couple of cases, walls) on area roads last night. First there was the guy who backed through a wall of the Houston House parking garage — we already talked about that — and then, around 8 p.m., a driver crashed into an Indian restaurant at Dairy Ashford...
Fire officials worked through the weekend to stabilize a burned-out east Houston office building in hopes of being able to begin an investigation of the cause of the fire. If the six-story structure at 9343 North Loop East is deemed safe enough, investigators could go in as early as Tuesday, nearly a week since the fire that killed three people and injured six more. Among the tasks in making the building safer this weekend was...
Houstonist was confused for a while as to how so many people could miss out on what read like "sure thing" type hook-ups. "We exchanged glances and underwear last night in Midtown, but I didn't get your number. If you're reading this, hit me back." How do you screw up something like that? We're still baffled but have written it off to hopelessness and decided that some folks are born to miss.
Remember the 37-story apartment tower announced last May for a block overlooking Discovery Green? KHOU reports that foundation work began this weekend, when about 800 cement trucks dumped their contents into the big hole at the corner of Austin at Lamar. And downtown observers are all atwitter: "I think that Houston will see a lot more residential development downtown. I think this is a lead project for many to come," said architect Jeffrey Ryan...
Via Off the Kuff, Rice Village-area residents are a little ticked off by a sign advertising Sonoma, the residential component of the proposed Piazza mixed-use development just off Rice Boulevard. You remember that, right? It's the $100 million, seven-story behemoth for which a block of Bolsover Street will be closed, with 225 condominiums, 100,000 square feet of retail space and an underground parking garage. But according to the Examiner, it's not the size of the development or its impact on the neighborhood that are upsetting locals right now: It's residential developer Randall Davis's slogan, "Home to Bohemians, Attorneys and Hippies," that's painted across a storefront on the site of the development.
More on Houston Pavilions, the three-block retail/office/entertainment complex to be built at Main and Dallas downtown: We noted earlier this week that plans for 200,000 square feet of residential space in the project have been scrapped despite a supposedly hot downtown residential market. Now we have a reason for the change in plans from project developers Geoffrey Jones and William Denton: The parking would have made rent too high.
Houstonist has never been much of one to mess with petitions, but we figured the possible demolition of the River Oaks Shopping Center (and the Alabama Theater) was as good a reason as any — better than most, in our book — to get started. So we're sponsoring a petition opposing Weingarten Realty Investors' plans to tear down the River Oaks center. If you missed the news this weekend, check out the Chronicle article. Here's...

Passengers at Bush Intercontinental Airport had a scare overnight when a fire broke out near a Taco Bell and filled Terminal C with smoke. The fire started around 3:30 a.m. and the building was evacuaed; though most of the people in the building were employees, a few passengers were forced to stand around outside while crews took care of the fire. "We thought it would be a good idea to get here early," Terry Brady, who was traveling to Philadelphia, told KPRC. "It wasn't, so we're standing out here with all our baggage." Correction: It's not a good idea to arrive early . Otherwise, we think it's OK.
A Houstonist reader recently wrote to ask about an art installation along Buffalo Bayou:
Native Houston rapper Big Hawk was found shot to death overnight while heading to a friend's house on the south side of Houston. According to local reports he was shot several times near Redfern and East Orem; no suspects or motive are readily available.
This has really been the month for speculation about Houston Pavilions, the proposed downtown retail, office and residential complex. First came the news that the land sale was complete for the three blocks HP is supposed to sit on, and then today we have word that House of Blues has signed on as the project's first major tenant.
