If you've driven past the Museum of Fine Arts this week, you probably noticed the multi-colored stripes being applied to the crosswalks surrounding the museum campus. No, it's not an embattled graffiti artist taking a stand, but a commissioned street art piece by Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez. Cruz-Diez is renowned for his kinetic and optical art, in which he uses the composition of colored lines to create the illusion of movement and the occasional dizzy spell. The crosswalks are being adorned bit by bit this week in time for the Latin American Experience Gala and Auction at the MFAH this Saturday and the opening of North Looks South: Building the Latin American Art Collection. The MFAH has several of Cruz-Diez's pieces in their permanent collection, and Houston is the first American city to install one of his crosswalk pieces. If you don't have the cash to attend the gala, you can check out the exhibit for free this Sunday. We just love Target Free First Sundays, don't you?

Houstonist ventured downtown on Saturday afternoon to enjoy the dazzling artistic talent on display at Via Colori, along with what seemed like half of the city. Benefiting the Center for Hearing and Speech, the third annual Via Colori showcased the amazing talents of local artists while raising money to help teach Houston-area hearing-impaired children learn to speak instead of relying solely upon sign language.
The inner graffiti artist in Houstonist is excited about the chance to see the city tagged legally this weekend. The Center for Hearing and Speech will host it's 3rd Annual Via Colori Street Painting Festival at Sam Houston Park (Allen Parkway and Bagby). Over 175 artists will create original artwork on the streets of Houston in squares sponsored by various local donors. While you're checking out the art you can nosh on festival food and beverages, or you can take your kiddies to the Via Bambini area where they can color in their own squares. This free event will also showcase some of Houston's favorite musicians on two stages. Some of the artists featured include The Brian Kalinec Band, Corian Ellisor feat. Alex Abarca and Kristen Frankiewicz, Two Star Symphony, Cafe Khytaro and DelEspadin Flamenco, Bourbon Street, Wild Moccasins, Sideshow Tramps and Moses Guest.
