With unseasonable weather descending upon much of North America, schools getting ready to reconvene, and sports seasons getting exciting, it's a busy time of year for us here in the Ist-A-Verse. Luckily, even with all the things we have to do, we still managed to get together to let you know what we've all been up to. After cooling down from a hot weekend of many badass Sunset Junction Street Fair photo dispatches, LAist asked...
Good morning, Houston. We've always wondered about our lady friends' uncanny ability to find food — particularly food they claim they shouldn't be eating — and now there's scientific evidence that women may actually have a built-in talent for locating grub. The news comes from The Daily Telegraph in the UK, which reports that women at a farmers' market were much better at finding a stall where they had bought a certain food than...
Face the Music: An Evening of Jazz Dedicated to Fighting AIDS in Africa A college student-led nonprofit organization that raises funds to eradicate AIDS in Africa will hold a fundraising benefit concert tonight at Red Cat Jazz Cafe [924 Congress St.] in Downtown Houston. The University of Texas at Austin branch of FACE AIDS is coordinating the concert featuring five local college student jazz musicians who graduated from the High School for the Performing and...
Good morning, Houston. If you happened to be in the Medical Center yesterday afternoon, we're pretty sure you noticed the natural gas leak. Even if you didn't see it, chances are you got caught in the massive traffic snarls it created after Main Street was closed between University and Sunset. Officials with The Methodist Hospital said a construction crew accidentally broke the gas line around noon, and it took most of the day to...
Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor longsdivision who shares this image of the I-10 and Beltway 8 interchanges. We've decided to round out the weekend with another road picture to drive us into next week.

If you've ever wondered what you could do to really make a lasting impression on Houston, have we got a deal for you: For $1,500, your name could be inscribed on the sidewalk alongside the soon-to-be-spiffy Kirby Drive. The sale of the 18-by-18-inch pavers will help fund the Kirby Coalition and Upper Kirby District's upgrade project for the street, which is being (or is planned to be, anyway) carried out at the same time as...
Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor laanba who treats us to this non-Houston like image that was actually taken downtown. The actual location is the Sunset Coffee Building near Allen's Landing but it looks as if it's straight out of the east coast.

Houstonist has gotten to where we avoid Kirby Drive whenever we can — not only because of the constant traffic, but also because the torn-up pavement makes us feel like we're sitting in the rear car of the Texas Cyclone. So we were excited to hear about changes coming for Kirby, including new pavement, new storm sewers and fancy decorative intersections. The practical parts of the project — reconstructed storm sewers and fresh pavement —...
Houstonist feared that the last of the local Elvis shrines vanished years ago with the renaming of Velvet Elvis and the closure of Aquarium Lounge. Rejoice, friends and neighbors! The King lives on at Rose Garden!
Yeah, yeah, we know it's not Saturday, but this is worth a special Shelterporn mention: This weekend, you can indulge your list for architect-designed homes (admit it, you have one) at the AIA Houston's 2006 Home Tour. The tour will include 10 architect-designed houses, including a recent Texas Society of Architects award-winning design: 505 West Alabama, a four-unit townhome project by Collaborative Designworks 4029 Chatham, a contemporary home on a Highland Village-area lot by Val...

What would a weekend in Houston be without some transit closures? This time around, we have a double shot: A road closure on the Katy Freeway and a MetroRail closure and bus detour in the Medical Center. First, the Katy: All eastbound lanes of the freeway between Silber and Washington will be closed from 9 p.m. today through 5 a.m. Monday. You can use east-west surface streets as a detour, or just stay home and...
So here's a civic project to get excited about: Tonight, Buffalo Bayou Partnership will host "Blue Bayou," a party to celebrate the opening of the Sabine to Bagby Promenade, a new park along Buffalo Bayou from downtown to the Sabine Street Bridge. The $15 million park — which doubles as a flood-control project — includes 2 miles of hike and bike trails linking the Allen Parkway/Memorial Drive trails with Sesquicentennial Park, 12 new street-to-bayou stairways...
