Holy smokes! Giant fish on the MTA, Paris Hilton in jail, then out, then in again, Al Gore, goatses, blumpkins, Matt Damon, and baby art critics! It's been a busy week across the Ist-A-Verse, and here's a smattering of what's been going on. In Gothamist's neck of the woods, they found out that many things are possible: A man caught a 40+ pound fish off the Rockaways and took it home on the subway. Graffiti... more ›

With the official beginning of the 2007 hurricane season a little more than a week away, Harris County officials have released a new evacuation plan based on ZIP codes. Residents of coastal and low-lying areas can determine whether they're in evacuation zones using a map of the area that groups ZIP codes into four zones based on threat, from the coast up through Brazoria and Galveston counties to Houston's East End, Channelview, Baytown and... more ›

On Sundays, Houstonist runs opinion pieces relevant to life in Houston. The opinions expressed below are entirely those of the author. Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. What was the deal with that woman who was busted driving solo down the HOV lane claiming she wasn’t alone because she was pregnant? If she wants that kid to count, put him in a car seat. Look, the lady was in... more ›

When we told you about ways to hail a cab last week, we forgot to include one thing you shouldn't do to get a ride: carjacking. It's never a good idea, especially considering that taxis are equipped with GPS systems, so the police won't have any trouble finding you. Just ask the two guys who jacked a cab in north Houston last night. It happened in the 9000 block of Irvington when two men approached... more ›

City Council yesterday approved a flat rate for all taxi rides within the downtown freeway loop and the creation of at least eight new taxi stands downtown, all part of an effort to make downtown more accessible to visitors, people without cars and downtown office workers. The flat rate, $6 for any trip inside the loop bounded by I-10, I-45 and Highway 59, applies no matter how many people share the cab. We fully expect... more ›

Bowing to pressure from cab companies, City Council delayed voting on a proposal to give people an affordable way to get to the airport yesterday. Actually, there was a fairly good reason for concern: The contract for the shared-ride airport shuttles, which has been in the works for weeks, would name SuperShuttle (in partnership with Yellow Cab) as the sole operator of the service. The taxi companies were worried about setting up a monopoly, a... more ›

Gothamist posts on the capture of a NYC perv thanks to Little Brother and a camera phone. They also scour the city for vodka martinis and Shamrock shakes and spot the friend from the Wonder Years at a city law firm. New York police think that Littlejohn is their man. more ›

We've all seen taxis with advertising on their trunks and roofs, but on their hubcaps? It's a little strange, but it's the latest thing in Houston, according to the Chronicle. The hubcap ads for the NBA All-Star Game started showing up on Yellow Cabs about two weeks ago. "We love them. They're a novelty. They're new," said Raymond Turner, president of Texas Taxi, parent of Yellow Cab. "We think it's an innovative way to advertise."... more ›
