Good morning, Houston. Suppose you're trying to keep up with piles and piles of government reports. How can you tell when there are too many? Simple: You ask for a report, of course. That's what the Texas State Library and Archives Commission did — and in a 668-page report, the commission has declared that the state is over-reported. The commission looked at more than 170 state agencies and universities and found more than 1,600...

We wouldn't go quite so far as to say that every day is an anniversary of 9/11, but there are several events happening around the city today to remember 9/11 and its victims. So hit them up, whether you're a firefighter, a civilian, or a troofer. >> Houston Fire Museum dedicates new statue: The Houston Fire Museum will dedicate a new statue titled "In the Line of Fire" to honor firefighters everywhere. Good morning, Houston. If you're like Houstonist, you've watched those TV specials about the University of Tennessee's body farm with morbid interest — and you were morbidly interested when you heard that a similar facility was being planned for Texas State in San Marcos. But the plan keeps running into roadblocks, the latest of which is a concern that the buzzards the body farm would attract could affect airplanes on their way to the...

A College Station bar fight early Thursday morning left Jonathan Bailey, a 22-year-old Rice University basketball player, dead and his twin brother Janson hospitalized. Details are still few, but according to police, the Bailey brothers were involved in a fight at the V Bar, a club near the Texas A&M campus. Those involved in the fight were asked to leave the bar and the fight continued outside; that's when police say Jonathan and Janson Bailey were stabbed. They were found at about 1:45 a.m. and were taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan, where Jonathan died and Janson is being treated for multiple stab wounds.

Earlier this month, we talked about the proposal to build a youth sports complex on the site of the Wortham Park Golf Course, one of three public courses inside the Loop and an East End institution for a hundred years. The complex proposal is part of Houston's push to keep the Dynamo in town — the team is looking for a new stadium and has stipulated that a youth soccer/sports complex be part of the deal, and Houston is keen to keep the men in orange from moving to the suburbs.

What is the deal with the building off of the east side of 45 in downtown across from the post office (bounded by Franklin and Bagby)? It looks like it was constructed (or renovated) recently and yet it sits there half-finished with broken glass. — Chris Chris, the building you're wondering about is the old Tennison Hotel at the corner of Bagby and Franklin, and you're right: It was renovated in the last few years,...

An exhibit which features art that reflects on the death penalty will open at M2 tomorrow evening and be on display until February 18. The Austin Chronicle called the show "nothing short of powerful." The pieces in the exhibit are in all sorts of media and were created by artists from all over the world (including Houston).

Kids are used to the routine of bringing a note to school when they've been absent from something, right? But soon, parents might have to get into it, too — at least those who miss scheduled parent-teacher conferences, that is. Under a bill before the state Legislature, parents who skip out on teacher conferences could be charged with a misdemeanor and fined up to $500 if they don't present a "reasonable excuse" for missing the meeting.

A new report from the Texas State Auditor's office focuses on TSU's endowments, claiming that the university spent at least $285,934 from the principal of some of its endowments, which are supposed to remain untouched. More might have been spent, too, but it was impossible for auditors to find out "because of the university's poor record keeping." The bad record keeping and spent principal on some of the university's 78 endowments, which total $23 million,...
