Just because you don't want to cook a huge spread or can't get out of town to visit family doesn't mean you have to spend Thanksgiving without some great food. We're thankful for our friends at B4-U-Eat, who have compiled a thorough list of all Houston-area restaurants that will be open on Thanksgiving Day.

Though Open City has only been open a few months, we've been hearing nothing but rave reviews and felt the need to check it out ourselves. Best decision we've made in 2008 (well, besides deciding to ignore our New Year's diet resolution).

He can make you burn, make you rock, or teach you about triangles. Houstonist recently caught up with Trevi "Big Daddy" Biles, local hot sauce maker/ Whorehound band member/ geometry teacher. Here's what Big Daddy Trevi had to say about Big Daddy's Ass Burn "Hell Goin' In Hell Goin' Out" Hot Sauce:

What up, Houston? Houstonist is glad to be back in the saddle after our "long winters nap." Looks like the Missed Connections crowd didn't take too much time off for Hanukwanzmas. Plenty of folks were out ho ho hoeing around. Enjoy.

So, if Thanksgiving is all about pie, pie and more pie, Christmas is all about cookies, for us, for Santa, for everyone we can pawn them off on give them to. Here at Houstonist, we love food, cooking it, eating it, telling you how to make it and where to find it. We'll even let you know if it's all "meh" not so much. Holiday desserts are the best and the calories do not count...

Houstonist got worn out on early morning White Russians and late night Bloody Marys during the Thanksgiving break. Thus, we were looking for something light and zesty when a fellow sauce fiend suggest we opt for a Slutty Shirley. The Slutty Shirley is a twist on the traditional children's cocktail, the Shirley Temple. You may remember Shirley Temple as a tap dancing little girl from black-and-white movies. The little lady inspired a fizzy red...

After stuffing ourselves silly on Thanksgiving, Houstonist vowed to take it easy on all the eating. We dutifully held our promise for a few hours, until our friend called us for lunch at Southwell’s. We don’t know whether our friend calculated that we would never turn down Southwell’s Hamburger Grill (despite binging just twelve hours earlier). Our friend, the pickiest eater we've ever known, had us at "Southwell's." We’ve been eating at Southwell’s for years...

Finding new homes for old homes While these were listed as demolitions, it may only be partial - both 2506 Morse in Montrose (picture) and 347 W 27th in the Heights had steel beams outside waiting to lift and carry them away. While house moving isn't unheard of in Houston, we are (pleasantly) surprised, and also curious about where these smaller homes will end up since we all know the current trend is "build big"...

Chris Simpson has worn many different hats in his musical career. He's first and foremost a songwriter, but he's been behind some of the most influential Texas bands of the last ten years. From emo pioneers Mineral (back when emo wasn't a dirty word) to the highly evolved rockers The Gloria Record, Simpson has cast a long shadow over the Austin musical scene. But eventually, you just want to hang out with your friends and...

The pumpkin is underestimated. It is underestimated and under-utilized like a trophy wife and a kept man. There is so much more that can be done than just gutting, carving and displaying (the pumpkin, that is). There's nothing that rings in the holidays better than the pumpkin. Since Thanksgiving is Houstonist's favorite holiday (all's to do is eat, drink, watch football and take naps...what's not to love?), we wanted to share with you all the...

Meyerland's Carousel House came crashing down today - the property's new owner Marvin Granit decided to hurry up and get it over with, just a day before Thanksgiving. The house has been an interesting architectural fixture in Houston since it was built by Robert Cohen in 1964, and has had a resurgence of attention since the previous owner John O'Quinn put it on the market. We featured the endangered home in late August, the Chronicle's...

We've already told about the concerts we're most excited about this week: Peter Bjorn and John at Warehouse Live and local artist Ethan Durelle at Fitzgerald's, both this Friday night. We also told you about Tori Amos' visit to Jones Hall this Sunday. If that's not enough for you, a lot of local acts are leaving their parent's dinner table early and playing some great shows all throughout the holiday weekend. Maybe you should...

The Day After Thanksgiving (aka Black Friday) has got to be one of the most stressful days of the year, with pent-up aggression and lingering turkey hangovers spilling into the crowded aisles of retail centers all over the city. After a day of fighting the unwashed hordes, you'll need a place to unwind and release some of that stress. If a cup of oolong and a Bach concerto isn't the antitode you're searching for,...

VS As shopping season is about to kick into high gear (yes, Thanksgiving is right around the corner which means that crazed shopaholics, uhh, we mean dedicated parents, come out of the woodworks to get a little violent for good deals) and Houstonist plans to be in the midst of all the hubbub at the Galleria. Yes, the parking will be crazy. Yes, the mall will be packed. Yes, we'll spoil ourselves to a...

Let's talk Quakers (aka: The Religious Society of Friends). First images that may come to mind: oatmeal boxes with that friendly looking guy in a suit, horse and buggies, interesting hats that tie at the chin... But it turns out that WE are seriously out-of-date. Today, the Live Oaks Meeting House (1318 West 26th St.) hosts a variety of events for an even larger variety of people. They rock out everything from breakdance competitions to...

Houstonist is no slouch in the kitchen. That having been said, when we accidentally set fire to a whole pumpkin during a Thanksgiving dessert test run gone wrong this week, Houstonist learned a valuable lesson: If you can't make it, fake it. Luckily, there are a few Houston institutions that have you covered in case your kitchen ambitions require more than your skill set can provide. Ruggles Cafe Bakery offers a wide selection of...

Looking to grab some last-minute groceries for the crowd you're entertaining this Thanksgiving? Consider ditching the bored-looking security guards at the supermarkets this week and going local at a farmer's market: Houston Farmer's Market has all the leafy greens you'll need to complement your turkey, as well as okra, shelled peas, and much more. They'll also have fresh chicken, beef, and lamb for less traditionalist cooks. Planning on being on the receiving end of...

You might want to set your TiVo for these. PBS is re-airing three great music docs on Saturday night, including a live performance of Willie Nelson's new classic country album and a collection of archival concert footage of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Monday -ABC, 11:05pm: Jimmy Kimmel Live, Hot Hot Heat Tuesday -NBC, 7am: Today Show, James Taylor -ABC, 9am: Regis and Kelly, Jordin Sparks -NBC, 12pm: Ellen DeGeneres, Soulja Boy Wednesday -NBC, 7am: Today Show,...

Spent all your cash on girlie drinks and shattered dreams again this weekend, didn't you? No worries - Thriftster gives you the lowdown on cheap stuff to do until Paycheck Friday. Thanksgiving Thriftsters are sexy. Happy Turkey Week! Monday: You're going to have a long week of family time, ambrosia salad and tryptophan sluggishness, so pace yourself with a free Monday night movie at Domy Bookstore (1709 Westheimer). While not completely seasonally appropriate (or is...

Better late than nevah - here's our roundup of feasting and imbibing in the very near future. See the bottom of the post for some Thanksgiving food ideas, we'll be continuing to update that, and no, we won't add Grandma Kroger to the list, or any other supermarket, for that matter. Well, maybe Central Market or perhaps Whole Foods, maybe. Great American Bake Sale -Dessert Gallery, Sugar Land Friday, November 16th – 6:00 p.m. until...

We've been seeing Christmas decorations going up around town earlier and earlier every year. This was the first time we could remember seeing green and red before Halloween. Still, retailers must remind people that it's almost time to go into debt in celebration of the birth of Jesus, so that's their right. The Galleria is celebrating the lighting of their huge Christmas tree (and the attendant shopping rush) with a performance by former Olympic skater...

Ah, the sweet smack of gentrification strikes again -- this time targetting the ever-quirky and loveable Super Happy Fun Land. Their current building (2610 Ashland St.) has been sold in order to make room for more condominiums, which some apparently delusional real estate-type creature has decided our fair city is lacking. Super Happy Fun Land will be moving on out by the end of January 2008 to locations currently unknown. Have an idea for a...

Good morning, Houston. It's November now, and you know what that means: We're at the beginning of nearly two straight months of Christmas. Retailers put their holiday decorations up early in hopes that shoppers will see them and get in the buying mood — but will it work? Not necessarily, if most shoppers are like Sharon Baker, who the Chron found at Macy's downtown. "I do like Christmas, but I need time to celebrate...

Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. Last night, I went out with some friends for a few drinks. Since when has Cinco de Mayo become such a big drinking event? It’s not even a major holiday in Mexico. As long as Dilettante has been aware of Cinco de Mayo, it has been a drinking holiday. But it does seem to be turning into more and more of an excuse...

Every now and then, Houstonist gets a little nostalgic for the plastic trays sliding on metal bars along steaming heaps of cafeteria food. No surprises, no hard-to-pronounce names, no fancy ingredients, what-you-see-is-what-you-get comfort food. Discreetly tucked away in West U, Cleburne Cafeteria (3606 Bissonnet) proclaims they serve the "Best Food in the World." Well, that's a bit of a bold statement. "Best Cafeteria Food" might be a little more believable. "Best Cafeteria Food in Houston"...

Sure, we've heard a lot about Houston's graffiti problem, but we don't remember hearing about a case of a police station getting tagged — until now. Early this morning, unknown people painted symbols and expletives on the walls of HPD's Neartown substation at 802 Westheimer.

6:35 p.m. Central Standard Time tonight marks the Winter Solstice, which means the days will begin to grow longer. Tonight is the longest night of the year and can also be the darkest night of the year, depending on the lunar cycle. December's Full Moon, by the way, is referred to as Oak Moon, Cold Moon, Frost Moon, Long Night's Moon or the Moon Before Yule - the last two are associated with the Winter...

Maybe we're just getting on in years and remembering the past better than it actually was, but it seems that when Houstonist was in elementary, middle and high school, we had a decent summer vacation — beginning at the end of May, say, and ending sometime in late August. But lately it seems like schools have been letting kids out later and bringing them back earlier, leaving an approximately 10-day summer vacation sometime in mid-July....

If you're hiking, consider charging up your iPod, as Seattlest finds out that a man lost during a hike was found by the glow of his iPod. That cleverness seems to be devoid in cops who were using police cruiser instant messaging clients - although we imagine IMs "so are you nakie" to be included in cop shows, just for realism. If only the cops were busting the Hummer-driving jerk who made a poor...

Houstonist is about to head home to get lost in a sea of turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce (in the shape of a can, naturally), mashed potatoes and pie — but before we do, we want to note something we're a little proud of: This week, Houstonist is one year old!
