Houston is home to the largest Art Car Parade (or so we believe, and that's all that matters) and said parade is surrounded by a weekend of mobile art magnificence. Beginning tonight at 7:00 p.m., when the Art Car Ball returns to it's full glory following an 8 year hiatus and ending on Sunday, when the Continental Club hosts the Art Car Awards Ceremony and Brunch. The real bonus for Houstonians and all who travel to witness this spectacular event is that almost all of it is free! Yes, free - gratis, no admission, no cover just buy or bring your food and beverages, depending upon the event. The exception? Tonight's Art Car Ball - which price is so reasonable it's nearly unreasonable! Here's a recap of the events, times, places and a synopsis of what you can expect. We can tell you from experience that your expectations will likely be met and exceeded. The Art Car Parade has been rolling successfully for over 22 years, with the help and dedication of over 300 volunteers - some whom have been a part of it since inception. more ›

It was your typical Friday night on the 3700 block of Main. There were bands playing at both The Continental Club and Shoeshine Charley's Big Top Lounge, The Mink was minding its own business serving drinks and Tacos-A-Go-Go were catering to their usual crowd of taco munchers when the evening started to really get hot! Hot as in flaming barrel hot. Houstonist Flickr photo contributor and resident photographer for The Continental Club, Jay Lee caught this event as it happened and has full details on his blog. more ›

This week is a little light on “big name” musical acts, but don’t let that get you down – there are still plenty of good local bands to see. Southern Rockers, Shinedown, are playing at Verizon Wireless on Wednesday. On Thursday you can check out Fulton Read, a strong new band from the Austin area, who is having their CD release party at Fitzgerald’s. Our pick for Friday is to see The Lemurs play... more ›

Just because there are no multi-million selling artists coming into town this week doesn't mean you should sit home. Actually, it's a great week to check out some quality local and regional artists. The Continental Club is hosting a killer Texas country/rock line-up Saturday night -- it includes Hayes Carll, Jesse Dayton and The Weary Boys. Also, Houston's Arthur Yoria is celebrating the release of his new CD at Rudyard's the same night. Other... more ›

Tonight, there's a real retro treat at the Continental Club, beginning at 8:00 p.m. (you have time to register yourself as an Art Car Parade Volunteer first). Folks, if you haven't seen them perform, and you like the B-52's even a little bit, you are missing out. Following them up... more ›

Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor The Bald Heretic. Taken on the 3700 block of Main Street, this photo captures an area with some great hangouts. On the corner of this photo is Julia's Bistro, next to it The Mink, next to it Shoeshine Charlie's Big Top, next to it Sig's Lagoon, next to it Taco's A Go-Go and at the other corner of the block is... more ›
