It's official: Houston is taking it's A game to Austin for the 2008 South By Southwest music showcase. From March 12 through 16, you can catch some of your favorite local acts play in the so-called music mecca of the American South. Some of our favorites get to tackle the festival, including Katie Stuckey and (The Band Formerly Known As) The Dimes. In fact, Austin will get the full spectrum of Houston music this year.......

We hope you have your Saturday cleared out because The Proletariat is dishing out so much local music goodness this weekend that we just don't know what to do with ourselves. Besides Friday's Fatal Flying Guilloteens and Co., the Pro serves up the always great Elaine Greer, the indomitable Hearts of Animals and the band formerly known as The Dimes on Saturday, February 2. Oh, and the Fiery Furnaces happen to play, too. Besides the......

We have some bad news for you: Joe Mathlete is leaving Houston. Yes, it breaks our hearts too. Not only that, but he’s leaving us for Austin of all places (insert scoffs here) and for a job (inset secondary scoffs here). But our love for Joe and his antics far exceeds our sadness, which is why we’ll be at The Mathletes’ first (and supposedly) last show of 2008. Fresh off their killer set as The......

We mentioned it in our interview with Mlee Marie Suprean, but our favorite local music blog The Skyline Network just released the poster for the Hootenanny, which only further solidifies the fact that we have to be there. So what's the Hootenanny? You've probably seen something like it before, but never done like this. Some of the strongest names in local music treat us to some of the classics, a treat that we'll selfishly......

If he isn't already, Joe Mathlete should be considered a local hero. It isn't enough that he has given us two of the funniest blogs on these here Internets (Joe Mathlete's Great American Blog and Joe Mathlete Explains Today's Marmaduke), but he's also the ringleader of one of the most enjoyable live acts in town. The Mathletes' "Pinocchiobot (or, The Devil and Robot McGee)" is a testament to Joe Mathlete’s brand of (successful) oddball......

The Dimes may not have swept the Houston Press Music Awards last week, but they did leave with the most trophies – three, to be exact (Best New Act, Best Indie Rock, and Song of the Year). While puppies (in age, that is) compared to many on the Houston music scene, they’re making a big splash right out-of-the-box. We caught up with Carlos Sanchez, guitarist and lead vocalist for The Dimes, as he and the......

This week, don’t be looking for the big, A-list concerts, but that doesn’t mean that there’s a void of good live music choices. Last week’s big winner at the Houston Press Music Awards, The Dimes, will be playing at The Proletariat with several other bands Friday night. Sam Houston Race Park continues their summer concert series with Cory Morrow the same night. Saturday, you can take a step back into the 80’s with legendary......

Last night, Warehouse Live played host to the annual Houston Press Music Awards. Houstonist was there to absorb all of the entertainment and was treated to some of the best local music around. The Dimes (pictured above) walked away as big winners, with three awards – Best New Act, Best Indie Rock, and Song of the Year, for “Delilah,” which they performed on stage midway through the night. Other performers included Million Year Dance......

When you think of block parties, you usually thing of a cul-de-sac in a suburban neighborhood with hot dogs, red and white checkered table clothed over folding tables, annoying neighbors drinking their Miller Lite while they scream at their kids. Put those thoughts behind you – the Westheimer Block Party is totally different, and much better. Think of a block party in the Montrose area, the heart of Houston, with over 40 local bands playing.......

Instead of vegging in front of the TV, or fighting the crowds at the mall, we suggest one of these concerts to pass away your holidays. Houston’s Allen Oldies Band is celebrating their 10th anniversary Wednesday night, allowing you to dance off some pounds before you fill up on turkey. Some great original local bands to catch this week include The Dimes and Something Fierce at Walter’s, and Ryan Scroggins’ ska band at Fitz.......

Everyone gets a case of the Mondays. There’s no better cure for the Mondays than celebrating a happy hour with great live music, sponsored by our favorite local music blog. This coming Monday, our friends at Houston Calling will sponsor a happy hour at the Proletariat. Not only is one of our beloved local musicians, Tody Castillo, performing, but you’ll also be treated to some great local power-pop from The Dimes and alternative pop/rock from......

So you’re back at work after a weekend of debauchery and trying to keep your New Year’s resolutions intact. Hopefully one of those resolutions was to see more live music – we’re happy to help you with that: Thursday The Wainwrights are one musical family – not only do you have Loudon, but his kids Martha and Rufus. Sloan Wainwright, the woman Rufus calls “auntie,” brings her husky voiced folk to the Duck. You’ll......
