"The Master of Orgasims", Jean Gerrard a crepe lover and a flaming escort joined the fray of Missed Connections as Houstonians searched for amateur philanthropists, hotties with some hotness or their roommate this week on Craigslist. Coffee shop crushes rebounded for those of you keeping score at home. Pickings were slim this week yielding only one "good" post. Enjoy? One of our favorite English bands are in town tonight: Gomez. Unfortunately, they'll only play a short set, since they are one of two opening acts for The Fray at Cynthia Mitchell Woods Pavilion in The Woodlands. We're trying to decide if we're going to brave the traffic and heat or hold-out for another headlining tour.
We really wish Gomez was performing a headlining show here, but we have to settle with them just being an opening act for The Fray (along with Eisley) this Friday night in The Woodlands. However, Gomez is playing a stand-alone show Saturday night in Austin, if you're lucky enough to find tickets for it. Some veteran Houston acts play around town this week. Beaumont's Clay Walker will perform after the races at Sam Houston...
Houston and four other Texas cities were among the big American cities that gained the largest number of new residents last year, according to estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau today. The estimates show that 26,600 people moved to Houston in 2006, bringing the city's population to 2.14 million — and we're sure every one of them is already joining the fray on the Katy Freeway. San Antonio and Fort Worth gained the second-...
We don't know about where you are, but it seems like spring can't decide whether or not to happen. Some days are warm, some days are cold, and sometimes you aren't sure which. Baseball may have started up (and soccer/football winding down) but it still seems cold out there. Unless it's not. Anyways, onto the -ists. Austinist happily anticipated fall's Austin City Limits, even though they're not fully recovered from South By Southwest. In...
Houstonist joined over 70,000 rodeo fans and rock music lovers in Reliant Stadium last night for the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo finale. This wasn't our first Houston Rodeo, but it was the first time Houstonist had attended with a rodeo nut. We were skeptical about arriving at 10:45 AM on a day when the main events did not commence until 3:45 PM. How were we to occupy our time until the stadium opened? Team...
Yeah, yeah. Sure, sure. It's spring and Astros fever is catching around town. But, football season is almost here five months away, and the draft is looming on the horizon. The Texans are making moves in the Free Agent market to gain talent and have a better idea their needs from the draft. Former Greenbay Packers running back, Ahman Green, will join the the backfield after signing on Sunday. Now the Texans are entertaining...
Remember back in August, when the HISD board voted to close three underperforming schools if they didn't shape up? The schools in question — Kashmere High, Sam Houston High and McReynolds Middle School — are three of the lowest-performing in the state: Kashmere and Sam Houston have earned "academically unacceptable" ratings for four consecutive years, while McReynolds has been ranked one of Texas' bottom five schools three years in a row. Supporters of the schools...
A little over a year before we get our own House of Blues downtown, word comes that the famed music venue and restaurant has been acquired by Live Nation, the Clear Channel Communications entertainment company. It was a $350 million transaction. Live Nation claims that the acquisition will not affect the opening of Houston’s House of Blues, which is set for the fall of 2007 in a new entertainment district near the convention center downtown....
Tuesday Denver’s The Fray is making inroads on radio with “Over My Head (Cable Car),” now No. 13 on the adult rock/pop charts, but you wouldn’t know it by listening to Houston radio (Mix 96.5 has that format but they’re so conservative musically that they probably won’t play it for another month, if ever). Similar to Goo Goo Dolls, but fresher. Cary Brothers (actually a solo guy, no siblings with him) and Matt Kearney...
