Originally built in 1918 as a Polish dance hall, Fitz was saved from demolition in 1977. The building has seen the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn, ZZ Top and James Brown. Sadists known as distance runners are expected to crowd the streets near George R. Brown Convention Center this Sunday morning to take part in the Chevron Houston Marathon, Aramco Half-Marathon and Houston Press/Smart Financial 5K. People in the Heights area are so sensitive. They complain about bars in their neighborhoods, they bitch about chain restaurants, they whine about proposed toll roads cutting through their back yards — and they're upset that developers want to come in and demolish their neighborhoods for high-density townhome developments.
