>> There are some big changes coming to Memorial Park: Houston's most popular park with a running trail and a burger joint is slated to get more improved features to help you sweat to the oldies. According to ABC13, Mayor Bill White's improvement plan will include a bridge across Memorial Parkway for cyclists and pedestrians, extended running trails, an improved tennis facility and a new shower facility for you dirty folks. Sounds pricey, huh? Yep. The City needs another $10 million bucks to combine with the $4 million currently earmarked for the project. Houstonist is awaiting confirmation of the rumor that EZ Tag stalls will be installed along the running trails to help pay for the project. more ›

The earth will ceased rotating on it's axis, or at least it will appear to have done so, briefly at 1:06 p.m. CST tomorrow, June 21st. That is precisely when Summer Solstice occurs. We hope that ups our odds for a date, because it's not exactly getting colder so we don't anticipate any "freeze overs" anywhere. What this means, in addition to your having a midsummer's night's dream (seeing fairy's and goblin's and the like) three days hence, is that the sun will be located direcly over the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern hemisphere. Our days will begin growing shorter following the solstice, the growing season is half over and St. John's feast, Ivan Kupala Day and the Wiccan observation of Litha are upon us. more ›

On Sundays, Houstonist runs opinion pieces relevant to life in Houston. The opinions expressed below are entirely those of the author. Happy December 31st! Since our resolutions pretty much stay the same from one year to the next (lose weight, get a better job, spend more time with the kids, get the drinking under control, stand up to that troll under the bridge), we need another way to note the passage of time. People in... more ›

Normally, the opening of another chain retail store in another suburban Houston mall wouldn’t make it to our pages. (Or maybe it would.) But this time, we’re really excited about the new store, which caters to the young, trendy, ever so slightly angry (or would that be emo?) crowd. It’s called Anchor Blue, and they’re just starting to spread to the Eastern parts of the US. Deerbrook Mall in Humble is going to be... more ›

Is it just us, or has the city's proposed graffiti crackdown been going on for a while? We first talked about it in late June, and then it came up again earlier this week. And after City Council discussed the would-be ordinance yesterday, councilmembers delayed a vote on the matter. Stamping out graffiti must be harder than it looks! more ›

Nine weeks in, and here we are in what may be the last days of the prosecution's case in the trial of ex-Enron execs Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling. Hang in there: It's almost time for everyone to go to the lobby to get popcorn and a Coke. But first, just a bit more testimony to go. more ›
