Forget those aging multi-million dollar album-selling world-touring pop stars. Houstonist thinks you should support local music. Start tonight by heading to Continental Club to hear The Octanes play. They perform a genre of music that is unique to our part of the country — mixing Rock-a-billy with Gulf Coast Blues. They've opened for Wanda Jackson! And their bassist Nick Gaitan (also of Los Skarnales) is a five-time winner of the Houston Press Music Awards Best Bassist category. Best of all, the event is free, and there will be drink specials.

Houstonist has an active and amazing Flickr photo group. We receive many, many photos of Houston and the surrounding areas every day and unless you are an active visitor to our photo pool many of these photos go unnoticed. So in a weekly effort to bring you more amazing photos from Houstonist readers and photographers, we are going to feature a block of photos submitted to our Flickr photo group. The images will be dug up from deep within our photo pool archives and we hope to expose you to even more wonderful Houston photography.
