Leap Day is a special in the astronomical and chronological worlds. A day is added to February, typically every four years, to keep the our calendar in sync with the Earth's trip around the sun.

Many people love The Bravery, and why not? Their blend of rock, pop, electronic and retro style new wave keeps you on your feet. But don't count Brandon Flowers of The Killers as a fan. When The Bravery released their debut album a few years ago, Brandon claimed that the New York City based band was capitalizing on The Killers sound. Hmm ... I think there are some 80's bands that may say the same about you, Brandon. (We're not complaining, we like them both.)
It’s hard enough to come up with enough words to entertain the masses of readers who flock to Houstonist as it is, but what do you do when the concert is a secret?
Cara Barer—The Book Project DeSantos Gallery Beginning with just a found soiled copy of the Yellow Pages, Cara Barer created The Book Project, and eventually had volumes of new sculptures resulting from old books. As book lovers, our first inclination was to scoff at the idea of destroying old books for the sake of art. But then we saw the sculptures. This is one of the Houstonist's favoritist things we've seen in a long time....
Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. I'm all for transportation by bike, but what's up with Houston bikers never observing stop signs and traffic lights? I almost run over and kill a biker every day, and it's always their fault. Maybe we need to add "bikes too!" to the bottom of every traffic sign and signal. -- Ophelia, Houston-upon-Avon Oh, Ophelia. You're missing the real problem with bicyclists: bike...
Jugglers, performers on stilts, dancing girls, horn players, a bass player, drummers and percussionist all converged on Market Square as the sun went down for a little free early evening entertainment. It was Portland's own MarchFourth Marching Band who provided Friday nights free show and we posted about them earlier in the day. So we took our own advice and headed down there to catch this unique and highly entertaining show. As we strolled...
The day was sunny with very few clouds overhead. The music was local and there was lots of it. Over fifty bands were scheduled to perform in the span of about nine hours at three locations with five stages and the block party fans came out in force to soak up the sun and music. There were artists, creating and selling art, there were art installations, a smattering of food and merchandise vendors. There was...
Houstonist hits Italy's Rimini Beach every Pasqua (that's Easter for y'all that don't habla) for fun in the sun, dynamite food and to make-uh the party. And while you can make-uh the party without booze, we like-uh our booze. One of our favorite Italian libations is limoncello. Limoncello is a great aperitif or digestif that is made from grain alcohol, lemon zest and sugar. The drink is sweet and sour, but not like Chinese food....
So, in case you haven't noticed, it's hot. Exactly how hot? It was 102 yesterday afternoon, tying the record set in 1962. On Friday, the heat index reached as high as 111 in some parts of town. Highs have been over 95 since last Monday, and it looks like they'll continue that way until the end of this week. Good lord. Looks like it's time to invest in a giant bag of ice and a...
The other day Houstonist popped into the Houston Center for Photography, that haven and support for all things filmic, to see a show entitled, "Japan." What especially intrigued us was the fact that the photographer, an HCP fellowship recipient, had been travelling in Japan while reading some of our favorite contemporary Japanese writers: slightly surrealist Haruki Murakami, cult-star Yukio Mishima, and the spare/smart Kenzaburo Oe. Says Amelia D'Entrone in her artist's statement, "A sense...
We've heard a lot about yesterday's bridge collapse in Minneapolis, and we also noted a story yesterday about repairs on a Highway 288 bridge that had to be carried out after recent heavy rains washed out part of the bridge's embankment. The natural question, then: Could something like the Minneapolis collapse happen in Houston? And the answer: Sure it could, but officials are doing their best to make sure it doesn't. According to the Chronicle,...
VIEWER'S CHOICE EDITION So tell us what you want, what you really, really want. Since the announcement that England's favorite fabulous five will be reuniting, we've been unable to concentrate on our weekend plans. With so much drama in the HOU, it's kinda hard figuring out what we should do. So we need your help. (in so many ways). Leave your comment as to what YOU think WE should do tonight. Here are our top...
Good morning, Houston. Are you sick of hearing about the iPhone? So are we. Some people are wondering if the iPhone will be able to live up to all the hype its been getting, and we can't imagine that any phone could unless it also serves as, say, a teleporting device. Let's just get to the news: >> Missing Polka King: Friends and fans grew concerned when Bobby Jones, billed as Wharton County's "Polka...
Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. What is that bright, shiny yellow orb up in the sky? And why is there a slinky gray thing following me around? The bright, shiny yellow orb is called “the sun.” It’s always above us during the day, but we haven’t been able to see it for some time. Enjoy it while you can because sources say the sun will be gone again...
The earth will ceased rotating on it's axis, or at least it will appear to have done so, briefly at 1:06 p.m. CST tomorrow, June 21st. That is precisely when Summer Solstice occurs. We hope that ups our odds for a date, because it's not exactly getting colder so we don't anticipate any "freeze overs" anywhere. What this means, in addition to your having a midsummer's night's dream (seeing fairy's and goblin's and the like) three days hence, is that the sun will be located direcly over the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern hemisphere. Our days will begin growing shorter following the solstice, the growing season is half over and St. John's feast, Ivan Kupala Day and the Wiccan observation of Litha are upon us.

Seattlest has a talk with the photographer from last week's "Segway Mom" and then experiences some dissension in the ranks over the question of wine vs. beer. It's not West Side Story, but about as close as they'll get. They're also still waiting on some inbox relief after a spammer is arrested. As Chicagoist counts down the days to its third anniversary party, they found all-organic pizza to be underwhelming amidst the hoopla, tried...
Good morning, Houston. If you've ever dreamed of designing a neighborhood marker, now's your chance: The Sixth Ward Property Owners group is looking for someone to come up with a sign to mark the historic area. "Right now we have markers in the neighborhood and they're in bad shape," Maria Isabel of the SWPO said. "It would be great to redo those." The design specs seem pretty open — the location and materials are...

Join us at Kay's as we test out their new hard liquor license and put on our beer goggles. Comments on the site are great, but face-to-face chats are more better. Drop by and let us know what you think about fun topics like...
Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor deji_01. What can you say about this image, it's near picture perfect. Soak up the sun and enjoy the view.
Good morning, Houston. Blah blah blah, et cetera. (Yeah, you can tell it's Friday again.) >> BP: Managers to blame for 2005 blast: An internal BP report on the deadly 2005 explosion at its Texas City refinery recommends that four top managers be fired for bad judgment and failing to do their jobs. The report — completed in February but kept confidential until it was released under court order Thursday — named Pat Gower,...
Good morning, Houston. When we were little, Mother Houstonist was always warning us not to look at the sun. But now we actually have good reason to stare — in a way, at least — because yesterday, NASA released the first-ever 3-D images of our galactic lightbulb. The images could lead to better predictions of solar eruptions, which can affect power lines and communication on Earth — but all we're really interested in right...

Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor gwenturnerjuarez. This immediately comes to mind... You may remember Houstonist's note on the fabulous new Blue Bayou, aka the Sabine-to-Bagby Promenade. This springtime weather won't last for long, so while the evenings are still cool and relatively bug-free, get over to the bayou this Saturday for a little nighttime fun. Nights on Blue Bayou will have star gazing with the HMNS George Observatory volunteers, boat rides, park food concessions, astrology readings, storytelling, night hikes and glow-in-the-dark face painting. In case you...
With the sun out, the temperatures high, one can only think of one thing-- what's going on in the World of the -ists? Bostonist dug deep to uncover Barack Obama's unpaid parking tickets, their Governor's latest ethical lapse, and a plagarizing sports writer. Chicagoist had everything in twos: two views on having the Olympics, losing two members of their Super Bowl team, and two music festivals. DCist put their noses in legal books as...
Good morning, Houston. Some good news: It's Friday. Some bad news: If you entered a contest on the Chronicle's website, your personal information could have been made public. SecurityProNews discovered a public section of the site that contained the names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses of thousands of people trying to win stuff from the Chron — and though the information has been removed, there's still the chance that John Q. Public could...
Good morning, Houston. If you have an outstanding municipal warrant, it's time to start watching out: More than 150 law enforcement agencies, including HPD, are gearing up to arrest you next week. It's part of the Great Texas Warrant Roundup, which runs for a week beginning Friday; if you don't take care of your warrant, KHOU warns, you risk "being arrested and embarrassed in front of family, friends or even co-workers." No, not co-workers!...
Good morning, Houston. You know what the problem is around this town? We'll tell you: mismatched news racks. But never fear — City Council is trying to save us. Under an ordinance presented to council this week, newspaper vendors would have to make their racks relatively the same size, keep them clean and in working order and paint them all the same color: forest green (we had some details back in the summer). The reaction?...
Good morning, Houston. In case you were wondering, the threat of a "sickout" by HISD teachers upset over the district's new merit pay program ended up not happening after all. "It never crossed my mind [to call in sick]," Anderson Elementary teacher Linda Burks told the Chronicle. "I had a job to do." She added that all her colleagues showed up for work Tuesday, too — but then again, most of them got bonuses....
