Former TSU President Priscilla Slade's grand jury testimony won't be unsealed so Slade's ex-assistant can search it for inconsistencies, State District Judge Brock Thomas ruled Wednesday — though a grand jury will be able to review the testimony to see if Slade committed perjury. It's not clear just what inconsistencies prosecutors believe might be in the testimony, but prosecutor Donna Goode said last week that "there's enough concern on my part to go through the gyrations of filing the motion." Slade, of course, is accused of spending nearly $2 million in university funds on unauthorized personal expenses during her term as president. more ›

According to a TSU survey, local government might have a hard time taking care of Houston's black population in a hurricane: The survey found that most Houston blacks think hurricane warnings are too confusing to follow and that the government isn't prepared to handle a disaster and would use a storm as an excuse to kick minorities and the poor out of their neighborhoods. So a couple of weeks ago, when we heard that ex-TSU President Priscilla Slade's Memorial Park-area manse had been sold, there was one thought foremost in our mind: "God, we hope someone famous bought it." And we're not disappointed: The new owner of 203 Terrace Drive is none other than Mario Williams, the Texans' controversial No. 1 draft pick. Ah, Priscilla Slade — we hadn't heard anything from the soon-to-be-former TSU president in a while, but today there's news that she has decided not to attend the public hearing she requested to try to clear her name and keep her job. Slade, accused of spending nearly $1 million in university funds for unauthorized personal purchases during her seven years as head of TSU, said through her attorney that she won't get a fair hearing, so she's staying home. Anyone want to bet that she complains later that no one listened to her side of the story? more ›

Turns out TSU President Priscilla Slade actually did follow university policy on one of her personal expenditures: a vehicle registration fee of $64.30. That's great and all, but it doesn't quite compare to Slade's expenses that weren't allowed under her contract: a whopping $647,949. The numbers come from a report prepared by TSU's internal auditor which shows Slade spent university funds on things like donations to her church, auto repairs, a personal maid and maintentance... more ›
