Remember that one time in France when you spent hours sitting at a quaint candlelit corner table with a great meal and a bottle of wine? Yea. That was awesome. Too bad France is so far away. But wait. That meal last night wasn’t in France? It was in a strip mall in Houston? Get out. Seriously, Café Rabelais, camouflaged in a very humble strip section of Rice Village, is a departure from the ordinary.... more ›

If you don’t look carefully, you just might miss it. There are no big signs, no front door fanfare, no huge welcoming committee to seat you…just a perfect little space in the Anya Tish Art Gallery off of Montrose. On a hot Houston day, a trip to Tart Café will chill you off instantly. The space is minimal, cool and clean with one huge floor-to-ceiling window that looks out to Montrose. Concrete tabletops mimic the... more ›

Raise your hand if you did not know that the Spec’s Liquor Warehouse Midtown (2410 Smith) also carries 5,000 square feet of deli and specialty foods? Hmmm? Yep. That’s what we thought. One hand too many. If you don’t live or work in midtown/downtown, it’s likely that you might not know about this hidden gem. Houstonist recently went to Spec’s for lunch. Yes, lunch. And then we wanted to come back for dinner and to... more ›

The big billboard on Kirby read, "Best Business Lunch." Well, Houstonist had some biznats and we needed some lunch, so off to Benjy's we went. Sandwiched between Antone's and a Scottish pub on the outskirts of Rice Village, Benjy's is in a great space that makes for trendy digs without the hassle of finding parking. Houstonist has been to Benjy's twice before - once for brunch and once for dinner. Both experiences were fairly unmemorable,... more ›

Every now and then, Houstonist gets a little nostalgic for the plastic trays sliding on metal bars along steaming heaps of cafeteria food. No surprises, no hard-to-pronounce names, no fancy ingredients, what-you-see-is-what-you-get comfort food. Discreetly tucked away in West U, Cleburne Cafeteria (3606 Bissonnet) proclaims they serve the "Best Food in the World." Well, that's a bit of a bold statement. "Best Cafeteria Food" might be a little more believable. "Best Cafeteria Food in Houston"... more ›

Houstonist makes the “long” pilgrimage to the outer-outer loop on Bellaire for our Vietnamese fix, so a hot spot in Montrose would rock our world. At first glance, Hollywood Restaurant (2409 Montrose Blvd) may seem like a video store by the same name, but keep reading the sign and you’ll see that it’s a Vietnamese restaurant…and a Chinese restaurant…oh, and as an afterthought, it’s also a French restaurant. The florescent, multicolored neon sign gave the... more ›

Ruggles Grill (907 Westheimer) is a die-hard veteran among Houston restaurants. Houstonist used to frequent Ruggles for special occasions and celebrations. With the opening of so many good restaurants in Houston in the last five years, and the establishment of the casual and laid-back Ruggles Café in Rice Village, it had been years since we’ve returned. Recently, Houstonist dined at Ruggles Grill to bring back the memories. And sadly, the memories were infinitely better than... more ›

The thing about Thai food is that it’s supposed to be a party in your mouth. Sweet flavors battle salty. Sour tastes balance the heat from the chili peppers. During a trip to Thailand, the Houstonist didn’t consider a meal successful unless we were sweating from the chili spices and dizzy with the contrast in flavors. Here in our diverse city of Houston, we’ve had some trouble finding unabashed Thai cuisine – flavors that are... more ›

All the publicity surrounding the Lay/Skilling trial has reminded Houstonist how much we like a good courtroom drama — the on-screen kind, that is. We started thinking about our favorite trial-related movies and were disappointed to realize that all the really good ones were made a long time ago. We suppose Hollywood doesn't think today's audiences have the attention span to watch that kind of thing, so instead of smart, gripping trial stories, we... more ›
