After an extraordinarily embarrassing event wherein Houstonist unwittingly drove the wrong way down a portion of South Braeswood Boulevard, we decided to thoroughly investigate the nature, goals, and idiosyncrasies of the Braeswood Boulevards. Our results have been quite astonishing and maddening, as these braided hydra-like streets weave, change course, change names, and sometimes suddenly disappear for a portion of their overall path as though it were not no thang at all. Our ultimate aim...

Face the Music: An Evening of Jazz Dedicated to Fighting AIDS in Africa A college student-led nonprofit organization that raises funds to eradicate AIDS in Africa will hold a fundraising benefit concert tonight at Red Cat Jazz Cafe [924 Congress St.] in Downtown Houston. The University of Texas at Austin branch of FACE AIDS is coordinating the concert featuring five local college student jazz musicians who graduated from the High School for the Performing and...

Good morning, Houston. When we were little, Mother Houstonist was always warning us not to look at the sun. But now we actually have good reason to stare — in a way, at least — because yesterday, NASA released the first-ever 3-D images of our galactic lightbulb. The images could lead to better predictions of solar eruptions, which can affect power lines and communication on Earth — but all we're really interested in right...

Houston politicians really are men and women of the people. Tonight, State Rep. Ellen Cohen will host a town hall meeting at Rice University to hear from her constituents about education in Texas. There will be two presentations, one by former Lt.-Gov. Bill Ratliff, of Raise Your Hand Texas, and a second by students from Lamar and Bellaire High Schools discussing tuition deregulation. After this, there will of course be time for comments and questions...

The Art Car Parade requires about 400 volunteers, in order to go off without a hitch. The parade is Saturday, May 12th, and the volunteer recruiting is getting off with a bang tomorrow with a Kick-Off Party at the Whole Foods in West University, located at 4004 Bellaire Boulevard @ Weslayan. Essentially, there will be a big parking lot party from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. with food, music, schwag giveaways and some art cars...

After about one-third of the original homes in River Oaks have been demolished, the Chronicle has now picked up a story about the will to preserve. The homes in the area, which were largely built by well-known architects for well-known families, have been meeting the same fate as many others in Houston (think Bellaire, West University, and creeping in to older neighborhoods - sixth ward, Heights and beyond). The average house size in the U.S....

Houstonist stayed up half the night glued to our television just to bring you the latest election results, locally, state-wide, and nationally. Let's look at how things went down yesterday. Locally: Much to the mayor's delight, propositions A-H all passed. This means good things for Houston's libraries, parks, police force, airports, etc. Mayor White is keeping the city moving, literally and figuratively. The Chronicle offers complete election results, but we're going to look at a...

He was in the starting lineup of our very first Astros game....in 1987. Still here today, beloved hometown hero Craig Biggio says next season will be his last, reports the Chronicle. He's still looking for his 3,000 hit, and is willing to do so either in another uniform or in hometown colors--but only for one more year. After that he'll hang up his hat (cap? helmet?), which he's been wearing for nineteern years as a...

Mayor Bill White signed a federal declaration today that made fourteen railroad crossings along the Union Pacific line designated Quiet Zones. The declaration, which is scheduled to go into effect on the first of August, will affect Houstonians from Memorial Drive to Willowbend Blvd., who often hear at least thirty-five different trains blaring horns night and day. According to KTRK, those who live near the train - primarily in West University and Bellaire - will...

Hello Houston! Here's what's up this week for cheap....

Last month, Mayor Bill White announced plans to build a wireless network to cover downtown and surrounding business districts. Last week, West University Place said it is also looking into going WiFi. Who’ll implement first? Our money is on West U.
