New on the Houston artisan foods market is Pola, a local cheesemaker. While most ‘local’ cheeses are from Texas hill country, Pola Artisan Cheeses are made right here in Houston with milk procured from small dairy farmers in the area. Pola produces a wide range of cheeses using old world methods. Varieties include both raw and pasteurized goat and cow milk cheeses. more ›

What would be the obvious career path for someone who went to Harvard for undergrad and Yale for law school? Well, write and publish restaurant guides, of course. Duh. Houstonist had the opportunity to sit with author/entrepreneur/foodie/publisher/world-traveller Robin Goldstein and his managing editor/foodie/marketer/public-relations-exec/S.O. Alexis Herschkowitsch. Robin has just released his Houston restaurant guide – Fearless Critic, Houston Restaurant Guide (one of the very first complete printed guides in Houston - and no, Zagat doesn't count).... more ›

From local Houston headlines, we bring you these weekend news bits... • A World War II era ship that Texas A&M-Galveston used as a classroom at sea has been sunk in the Gulf of Mexico to create an artificial reef. • HPD is cracking down on ID Theft. Better late than nevah - here's our roundup of feasting and imbibing in the very near future. See the bottom of the post for some Thanksgiving food ideas, we'll be continuing to update that, and no, we won't add Grandma Kroger to the list, or any other supermarket, for that matter. Well, maybe Central Market or perhaps Whole Foods, maybe. Great American Bake Sale -Dessert Gallery, Sugar Land Friday, November 16th – 6:00 p.m. until... more ›

This week ended with the launch of the seventh and final Harry Potter installation. But while the world was consumed with Pottermania, it's important to remember that there were more serious things going on in the world, too - two of them in -Ist cities. Sampaist was shocked when a passenger jet crashed into the center of Sao Paulo, killing at least 200 people. The airplane, an Airbus A320, skidded off the runway at the... more ›

What's with all the Missed Connections going on at grocery stores this week? Among others, we had a probable stalker at Kroger, a guy who might be jumping the gun a little bit at a Galveston grocery store, and yuppie love at Whole Foods - originally sung by Donny Osmond. You guys need to get your hands on a how-to guide - picking up chicks at the supermarket is supposed to be easy. You:... more ›

The Art Car Parade requires about 400 volunteers, in order to go off without a hitch. Just so you know, Houstonist has never had the urge to live in a luxury high-rise. Sure, we might keep a weekend place for those times we jet up to New York, but in general, we prefer a home that's closer to the ground. But we know some people think it would be great to have a deluxe apartment in the sky, and with that in mind, we bring you this 22nd-floor unit at... more ›

Happy Friday and Happy St. Patrick's Day Eve! We said we'd recap, so you would have all of your choices for fun readily available, so here goes, with additional stufff, and stuff. Good morning, Houston. You know what the problem is around this town? We'll tell you: mismatched news racks. But never fear — City Council is trying to save us. Under an ordinance presented to council this week, newspaper vendors would have to make their racks relatively the same size, keep them clean and in working order and paint them all the same color: forest green (we had some details back in the summer). The reaction?... more ›

I was wondering if you could do a round up of restaurants that will be open on Thanksgiving for we few freaks who will not be spending time with friends and/or family. You would know this better than a recent transplant like my(sorry)self. Hey, just because you're not able to spend time with friends and family on Thanksgiving doesn't make you a freak — it's what you do while you're away from your loved... more ›

A reader tipped us (thanks) to a Houston Business Journal report that Eatzi's is closing its Houston location at 6 PM today. The Post Oak business was a favorite Galleria area lunch destination as well as offering a full fare of take-out options for dinner, which we pawned off as our own on many occasions. The Dallas-based company has not commented on the closing, nor does their web site offer insight on the matter. However,... more ›

On Tuesday, the American -ists will be celebrating democracy and hitting the polls, letting politicians know what they really think. It just made us wonder: if it were up to the -ist-a-verse, what would we be voting for? Londonist votes for better skincare, alternative spaces for art, cute little birds and the men who keep them, and concrete. Lots of concrete. Shanghaiist votes for one of the Bee Gees and Air Supply (it's a double-ticket),... more ›

Surely you've heard of the national spinach scare caused by some apparently tainted greens from California that have made more than a hundred people sick with E. coli and killed one elderly woman. But this weekend, KHOU reported on a new local twist in the story: A truck driver was arrested in Fort Bend County for allegedly dumping a load of spinach and pre-packaged salad greens in the San Bernard River. Whereas this would usually... more ›

Celebrate Ben Franklin's 300th birthday with the Bikini Bandits and Phillyist! (NSFW). Speaking of Mr. Franklin, send in a picture of Ben (or Ed Rendell) with a red tongue and win a free t-shirt. And they might have the next YearlyKos in Philly. You know who's going to be upset about those Bikini Bandits? The Houston school system. Houstonist also reports on some redevelopment shenanigans over a landmark theater. LAist's sex advice column on... more ›

If it's in season, Houstonist will find a culinary use for it — even mundane mint comes in handy for mojitos and juleps, and it adds a lot to fresh vegetables, free-range chicken and lamb. But where can you go to find organic produce in Houston? We have some ideas: In addition to the tried, true and terribly fabulous Whole Foods Market and Central Market, there are several area farmer's markets to explore. We particularly... more ›

Hey, have y'all been using our new "Recommend this" feature at the bottom of each post? This week we're bringing you the "Most Recommended" posts from across the -ist world, as well as recommending some of our own. Phillyist thinks that readers recommended this post the most because "most of our quieter readers (probably) agree with us that rude commenting sucks." Know what else sucks? Philly's not getting the Olympics, but they are getting thinner.... more ›

We were floored to read a KHOU report about a small, but growing, sect of Americans who actually choose not to eat meat — and some of them are right here in Houston. "Vegetarians here?" we sputtered into our mid-afternoon cured meat snack plate. "The hell you say!" But it seems to be true: In a story headlined "Gone veggie: Trend to stop eating meat hits Houston," Channel 11 reports that almost 3 percent of... more ›

So we're coming to this late, but it's still worth a mention: If you know of a locally produced food product that you think everyone else should get exposed to, tell Whole Foods Market and you could end up with an extra $100. It's part of WFM's Go Local program, which was announced last month, and here's how it works: If you find a local product Whole Foods doesn't carry, e-mail go.local@wholefoods.com with the poduct... more ›

If the Mixed Media Music Series at the MFAH a couple of weeks ago didn't quench your thirst for getting your groove on in the Museum Disrict, take heart: You have another chance tonight, and every Friday through Aug. 25, at the Houston Museum of Natural Science's Mixers, Elixirs & IMAX series. more ›

San Francisco is proud host of a new reality show called "How to Get the Guy" that's unfortunately not a descendant of Will and Grace, Queer Eye, The L Word, American Idol etc. Also a biodefence lab is coming to the East Bay and SFist teaches wine pairing. Getting on the wrong train sucks. Getting on the wrong train and becoming the victim of what will later be described as a "stabbing spree" really sucks.... more ›

Even though the traffic will be so thick we're sure we'll never get to go there, Houstonist was excited to learn this morning that a super-sized Whole Foods Market flagship store is coming to Uptown. Whole Foods announced it will build an 80,000-square-foot store in the unfortunately named BLVD Place (which, the Chronicle tells us, is pronounced "Boulevard Place" — so, uh, why not just name it that?), a 21-acre mixed-use development at the corner... more ›
