We have to begin this week's Shelterporn with a disclaimer: Manhattan, Randall Davis' odd residential concoction across the street from the Water Wall, doesn't really suit our taste. But we'll freely admit that, if someone came to us and offered the keys to this penthouse in the building, we'd find it hard to turn down. Just saying. Access to the eighth-floor unit is through a 38-foot gallery that's perfect for hanging your art collection...

Good morning, Houston. We're happy to report that we've found out the AIA and Google have combined two of our favorite things: architecture and Google Earth. Now there's a Google Earth layer featuring 3-D models of some of the structures on the AIA's list of America's favorite architecture, which brings desktop tourism to a whole new level. Among the buildings on the AIA layer: Pennzoil Place, the Astrodome and the Williams Tower, the three...

Via Austinist, the American Institute of Architects celebrated its 150th birthday last month by surveying 1,800 randomly chosen Americans on what their favorite U.S. works of architecture were. An AIA panel then narrowed those choices down to come up with America's Favorite Architecture, a list of the 150 most popular structures in the country. As you'd expect, at the top of the list are a bunch of national icons: the Empire State Building, the...

No matter what image problems Houston suffers, its architecture, caught in the right light, can be beautiful. Today Brazos Bookstore is hosting a book signing by world-renowned photographer Dr. Valentin Gertsman of his new book, Philip Johnson in Houston: Image and Imagination: To call Dr. Valentin Gertsman remarkable would be an understatement. Born in Moscow in 1925, Gertsman endured the repression of Communism, the brutality of war and the estrangement of his family. In 1974,...

The shot from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor inkoluv. Trying to give everyone a break from the Anna Nicole/Crazy Astronaut news, here's a lucky (and skillful) shot taken at the Williams Tower. Besides the nice contrast of blue sky and green of the folliage, there's something lurking in the background. Can anyone guess what it is? If you've got a camera, and you love Houston, consider joining Houston's best photographers in the Houstonist...
The shot from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor groovehouse. This was too cool not to include, even if we're a day late: On January 25th, 2005 famed architect Philip Johnson passed away, he was 98 years old. Houston is fortunate to be graced with several wonderful buildings designed by Philip Johnson. Two of these are picture above, The University of St. Thomas and The Chapel of St. Thomas. He also designed two amazing...
