Good morning, Houston. If you're hoping that the United States will one day be free of its dependence on foreign natural gas — and we're sure at least one of you is — this isn't your lucky day: According to a report from the Energy Forum at Rice University's Baker Institute, there's no end in sight to our use of imported gas. Natural gas accounted for 22 percent of total primary energy use in... more ›

Good morning, Houston. We heard a few weeks ago about a bat infestation at TSU, but now there's something else happening in the halls of academia: a bee infestation at UH. It seems 100,000 of the industrious little critters have taken up residence in the walls of the Cullen College of Engineering, but rather than exterminate, the university is planning to move the bees to a wooded section of campus. Beekeeper Mike Knuckley will... more ›

Good morning, Houston. So, did you hear about the guy who accidentally shot himself during a gun show at the George R. Brown Convention Center? Nope, not a joke: The guy was apparently trying to disassemble his Glock .40-caliber handgun while shopping for a part for the gun when he shot himself Saturday afternoon — but the real kicker is that it looks like he was carrying the gun illegally. Just ask the two guys who jacked a cab in north Houston last night. It happened in the 9000 block of Irvington when two men approached... more ›

Bowing to pressure from cab companies, City Council delayed voting on a proposal to give people an affordable way to get to the airport yesterday. Actually, there was a fairly good reason for concern: The contract for the shared-ride airport shuttles, which has been in the works for weeks, would name SuperShuttle (in partnership with Yellow Cab) as the sole operator of the service. The taxi companies were worried about setting up a monopoly, a... more ›

We've all seen taxis with advertising on their trunks and roofs, but on their hubcaps? It's a little strange, but it's the latest thing in Houston, according to the Chronicle. The hubcap ads for the NBA All-Star Game started showing up on Yellow Cabs about two weeks ago. "We love them. They're a novelty. They're new," said Raymond Turner, president of Texas Taxi, parent of Yellow Cab. "We think it's an innovative way to advertise."... more ›
