We really wish Gomez was performing a headlining show here, but we have to settle with them just being an opening act for The Fray (along with Eisley) this Friday night in The Woodlands. However, Gomez is playing a stand-alone show Saturday night in Austin, if you're lucky enough to find tickets for it. Some veteran Houston acts play around town this week. Beaumont's Clay Walker will perform after the races at Sam Houston... more ›
Saturday marks the "piece de resistance" of Art Car Weekend - The Art Car Parade! Houstonist is singing "I Love a Parade" in our very best Ethel Merman voice in celebration of this event (normally, we stick to "There's No Business Like Show Business"). The world's largest and oldest parade of its kind makes its way into downtown on Allen Parkway for the 20th year to an anticipated crowd of over 200,000 people. This year's... more ›
The Art Car Parade requires about 400 volunteers, in order to go off without a hitch. The parade is Saturday, May 12th, and the volunteer recruiting is getting off with a bang tomorrow with a Kick-Off Party at the Whole Foods in West University, located at 4004 Bellaire Boulevard @ Weslayan. Essentially, there will be a big parking lot party from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. with food, music, schwag giveaways and some art cars... more ›
Lindsay Perth is a transplanted Canadian artist who now resides in Scotland. She is one of the artists whose work is exhibited in the Never Been to Houston show. On the right is one of her photographs from the exhibit. Lindsay answered a few questions about Houston and the show for us. Read on: What was your perception of Houston before you started this project? My perception was of lots of glass and reflections and... more ›
Houstonist joined over 70,000 rodeo fans and rock music lovers in Reliant Stadium last night for the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo finale. This wasn't our first Houston Rodeo, but it was the first time Houstonist had attended with a rodeo nut. We were skeptical about arriving at 10:45 AM on a day when the main events did not commence until 3:45 PM. How were we to occupy our time until the stadium opened? Team... more ›
Busy week for live music, thanks to SXSW and it's overflow of artists into Houston. Some of the showcases you can check out include Super Happy Fun Land's nightly extravaganza and Alternative Press brings you "Bands you Need to Know" on Friday at the Meridian. Proletariat and Walter's on Washington are just two other of the many venues hosting SXSW artists. We highly recommend checking out a few of these shows this week --... more ›
Now Playing Houston: The Liberty Hall Poster Show Houston rocks, but back in the day, we really rocked and Liberty Hall was a premiere downtown music venue. From the late sixties to the mid seventies it hosted such artists as Waylon Jennings, Bruce Springsteen, Lightnin' Hopkins, Johnny Winter, Ted Nugent, Gram Parsons, ZZ Top, the Velvet Underground, The Ramones and a pre-gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman. See a collection of posters from this era on... more ›
Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor mjecker. It's a boot on a barstool at Fitzgerald's in The Heights. Originally built in 1918 as a Polish dance hall, Fitz was saved from demolition in 1977. The building has seen the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn, ZZ Top and James Brown. What more needs to be said, really. If you have a passion for Houston and photography, consider joining... more ›
Back in November, we gave you a sneak peak at some of the entertainers that were lined up for the 2007 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Today, the full line-up has been announced. It looks like the committee decided to stick with the devil they know, instead of finding fresh acts. The only performers making their rodeo debut are Los Lonely Boys, KEM, Josh Turner, Pesado, Sugarland, The Cheetah Girls and Hannah Montana. Sheryl Crow... more ›
If you like country music, or sparkly cowboy hats, or large, snorting animals, you're probably like us and can't wait for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. This year, which marks the 75th anniversary of the Rodeo, a total purse of 1.275 million dollars will end up in competitors pockets, making this the biggest-paying event of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association's regular season. Rodeo officials have also announced four of the performers for this year's... more ›
We love the fact that you can run into the members of ZZ Top (Dusty Hill, Billy Gibbons, and Frank Beard) almost anytime in Houston, even if they're not in their 1933 Ford Eliminator. The Houston boys have had a good year – first, they were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and this week, they we're inducted to the Houston Hall of Fame. For more than 35 years, they have... more ›
We were kind of surprised to read about Houston's 170th birthday party, which will be held downtown this evening — not that Houston doesn't deserve a birthday bash, but we've always heard the city's real birthday was Aug. 30, 1836, the day the Allen brothers opened Houston up for development with a series of, um, optimistic newspaper ads. So the city is celebrating its birthday a week early? Well, whatever. More important to most people,... more ›
